Biography

My research interests are primarily around the role of the school counselor and the impact school counselors can have on students' emotional health, academics, and career planning. I have shared my research and work through several mediums, like USA Today, The Hechinger Report, WCCO, and several other news and media outlets. I published a case studies text in 2019 for the training of school counselors and enjoyed collaborating with school counselors across the state of Minnesota and the United States. I have been published about the role of school counselors with TRIO students, at-risk student populations, as well as the school counselors relationship with technology and School-Family-Community Partnerships. I enjoy presenting research with students at state and national conferences, like the American School Counselor Association Annual Conference each year.

I have worked in many areas of education, as a classroom teacher, school counselor, and now teaching counseling to our master’s students in the Counselor Education (CE) program. I truly enjoy my work at the university level and was awarded the 2016 College of Education and Human Development New Career Excellence Award.

As the Director of Clinical Training, I work with all our Counselor Education students to find practicum and internship sites across the metro area. Advising students on licensure whether in mental health counseling or school counseling is also part of my role in the CE program. In addition, I work on program accreditation and collaborate with other programs across the state through various committees I serve on. I also am an ASCA RAMP reviewer, reviewing programs from across the country who apply to be a Recognized ASCA Model Programs.

In addition, I have been fortunate to serve in several leadership positions and connect with counselors across the country. I am the former President of the Minnesota School Counselor Association Board (2019-2020) and served on the MSCA Board for 7 years. I also have served on the Lakes Area Counseling Association as President and Treasurer. I am also an active member of ASCA, ACA, ACES, and NCACES. Lastly, I currently serve on the University’s Campus Committee on Student Behavior.
