In memoriam: Frank Benjamin Wilderson

Dr. Frank Benjamin Wilderson, Jr. recently passed away at the age of 94. Wilderson spent 37 years at the University of Minnesota, retiring in 1999. During his time at the UMN, Wilderson ran the Urban Education Program, teaching many elementary educators about Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) and helped to form what would become the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Additionally, his expertise expanded beyond special education and the College of Education and Human Development. Along with being a clinical psychologist, Wilderson played a crucial role in the UMN's establishment of the African American Studies Department. During the protest known as the "Morrill Hall takeover," he worked with the Afro-American Action Committee (AAAC). He was then called to chair the committee that created the department. This led to Wilderson serving as the vice president for student affairs for 14 years. Wilderson was a staunch advocate for mental health and equity both during his time at the UMN and in his work outside of the University.
